For Conference Action — presented by the Common Table.
The North Georgia Conference is asked to adopt the Unification Plan (the full plan is published at georgiaumc.org/resolution) with the intention that it govern the creation and structure of a new Georgia Conference of The United Methodist Church, with boundaries coextensive with the current North and South Georgia Conferences.
The resolution further entreats the Southeastern Jurisdiction (SEJ) Conference, at its 2026 called session, to:
- Approve the realignment of the boundaries of the North and South Georgia Conferences to form the one new Georgia Conference;
- Authorize a joint organizational conference — the Unifying Conference — consisting of the voting membership (lay and clergy) of both conferences, held before the new conference is formed; and
- Authorize the Georgia Conference to commence operations as a fully unified conference once the Unifying Conference is complete, in accordance with the plan adopted by both conferences at their 2026 sessions.
Background: the cabinets of the two conferences met in July 2025 and deliberated consolidating into a single entity; both 2025 sessions had already voted to endorse the intent to pursue a new conference. This 2026 vote is the approval of the actual Plan of Union.
